Within hours of winning the House, Democrats had settled on their priorities. Not inflation. Not energy prices. Not the border. Investigations.
The list is long: the president's family finances, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General. Every one of those inquiries will consume weeks of hearings, mountains of subpoenas and millions in taxpayer money.
Oversight or obstruction?
Congressional oversight is a legitimate duty. But oversight is meant to improve government, not to paralyse it. Targeting the agency that enforces our immigration laws sends a clear signal about which side of the border debate the new majority is on.
The president has asked the Justice Department to look into Democrats' threats against his Cabinet and supporters. Whatever comes of that, Americans are entitled to ask a basic question of the incoming majority: what is your plan to make life better for working families?
Two years from now, voters will judge them on the answer.
