Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote has launched a fuel storage facility in Namibia, extending his group's footprint into southern Africa.

The move builds on the Dangote refinery near Lagos, the largest single-train refinery in the world, which has transformed Nigeria from an importer of petrol into a supplier for the region. Storage capacity in Namibia gives the group a base from which to supply fuel to neighbouring markets.

African governments have long sought to reduce their dependence on imported refined fuel, much of it shipped from outside the continent. With the conflict in the Gulf disrupting global oil flows, regional supply has become more valuable.
