President Donald Trump has named Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles, who ran his 2024 campaign and has led his staff since the start of the second term.

Mr Miller has worked for the president since the 2016 campaign and is best known as the driving force behind the administration's border and immigration policies. His appointment signals that the White House intends to press ahead with its agenda rather than moderate it after Tuesday's midterm losses.

Only weeks ago the president said he was not considering replacing Ms Wiles. He announced her exit this week and has indicated that further changes to his Cabinet and senior staff are likely in the coming weeks.

The reshuffle comes as the White House prepares for two years of divided government, with Democrats set to take control of both chambers of Congress in January and promising extensive investigations of the administration.
