The House of Representatives is expected to vote next week on articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky said he would force the issue.
Several Republican sources expect the measure to pass, according to reports, with the outgoing House still in session until the new Congress is sworn in in January. A conviction would require a two-thirds vote in the Senate.
Mr Hegseth has led the Pentagon through the conflict with Iran, now around eight months old. Democrats have said they will investigate him once they take control of House committees, alongside Attorney General Todd Blanche, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the president's family finances.
The president's allies say impeachment would be a political move against a secretary who has carried out the president's orders to confront Tehran, and argue that the timing — days after the midterms — shows that the drive is about politics rather than policy.
