President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice to investigate Democrats he says are "going around threatening a lot of people", calling their conduct "extortion at the highest level".

In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, the president said members of his Cabinet had been threatened with impeachment and that his donors — whom he described as "some of the most respected people anywhere in the World" — were being targeted for their political views. He singled out Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin. The post did not set out specific evidence, and neither the Justice Department nor Senator Slotkin had publicly responded.

"Lawyer up"

The order follows a string of warnings from Democrats since they won control of Congress on Tuesday. Representative Robert Garcia of California, who is expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, posted "LAWYER UP" on social media after his party secured the House.

Democrats have said that once they take over committees in January they will investigate the Trump family's finances, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Supporters of the president say the threats confirm that the new majority intends to spend the next two years on retribution rather than on lowering prices or securing the border. Critics of the order say the president is using the Justice Department against his political opponents.
